PHILADELPHIA – Yet another 4-3 triumph, this one over city-rival Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night at the Hamlin Center, secured the USciences women's tennis team's sixth consecutive appearance in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament.
With the CACC Tournament beginning in the semifinal round this year, the Devils now have the longest active streak of making the CACC Semifinals in the league at six.
Prior to this streak, University of the Sciences had made the CACC Semifinals just three times in its first 11 years in the conference.
Again tonight came down to Myra Anwar at No. 5 singles, and the junior delivered in three sets once more, battling back from a 4-6 first-set loss to win the second and third, 6-1, 6-2.
That was USciences' fourth singles victory as the Devils had to recover from dropping the doubles point, despite a tiebreak triumph, 7-3, for Han Le and Stephanie Mazurek at the third flight, the duo's team-best fourth win together.
USciences was down 2-0 after Chestnut Hill won No. 1 singles, but Charlotte Kordonowy got the Devils on the board with her team-best fifth singles victory, 6-2, 6-2 at the second flight.
Rosemary Esquivel and Stephanie Mazurek also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, to bring USciences with a point of the CACC Tournament.
Mazurek is now second on the team with four singles victories, while Anwar is now third with a 3-3 record.
The Devils close out their season at another city-rival, Jefferson, on Saturday at 12 p.m., with the winner securing the two-seed in the CACC Tournament.
