PHILADELPHIA – The USciences women's tennis team celebrated both Senior Day, as well as its last-ever home match, by defeating Bloomsburg 6-1 on Thursday evening at the Hamlin Center.
Prior to first serve, the Devils honored the senior class of Danielle Paran, Han Le and Stephanie Mazurek.
Mazurek observed the occasion by dropping just two games in her No. 6 singles match to move into a tie for the team lead with seven singles victories. It was her 35th career singles win, now fourth in program history.
She is tied on seven victories with Charlotte Kordonowy, who was also a straight-sets winner, 7-6 (2), 6-2, at the first flight.
University of the Sciences took five of the six singles matches, with Myra Anwar and Myka Williams also winning in straight sets at the third and fourth flight.
Kirsten Wijnsema then put a stamp on the night by coming back for a three-set triumph, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
The evening began with the Devils winning two of the three doubles matches, including Kordonowy and Wijnsema losing just one game at the first flight.
Anwar and Williams were 6-4 winners at No. 2 doubles, moving Anwar into a tie for the team-lead with Kordonowy with six singles victories apiece.
Mazurek and Le nearly made it a doubles sweep, as they were edged 4-6 at the third flight in a match that featured Mazurek's sister.
University of the Sciences plays its last-ever match on Sunday, traveling to Saint Joseph's for a 1 p.m. first serve.
