PHILADELPHIA – In a preview of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semifinal that will take place this Friday, Jefferson defeated the USciences women's tennis team 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory secured the Rams the two seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament, while the Devils will be the three seed, as both teams end the season 4-2 in league play.
The margins were slim, with Jefferson winning two of the three doubles matches, all of which were tightly contested, before going on to win four of the six singles matches, including both that went into three sets.
Myra Anwar and Kirsten Wijnsema improved to 2-1 in CACC play with a 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles, but Rosemary Esquivel and Charlotte Kordonowy and Han Le and Stephanie Mazurek were defeated 6-4 and 7-6 (3) at the first and third flight, respectively.
Esquivel and Mazurek both responded to win in singles play, with Esquivel's victory coming in straight sets at the third flight.
Mazurek prevailed in three sets at No. 6 singles to end the fall regular season a team-best 5-2, including 5-1 in the conference.
Jefferson won No. 2 and No. 4 singles in straight sets to ultimately clinch the match, before taking three-setters at the first and fifth flight.
Kordonowy was denied a team-best sixth singles victory at No. 1 singles, while Anwar won a second-set tiebreaker 7-4 before falling 5-7 in the third at No. 5 singles.
Friday's Semifinal is at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, Del., with first serve set for 1 p.m.
