WILMINGTON, Del. – Facing city-rival Jefferson in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semifinals just three days after a 5-2 loss to the Rams, the USciences women's tennis team jumped out to a 2-0 lead, flipping points at both doubles and No. 2 singles.
Jefferson would win four of the final five singles matches though, defeating the Devils 4-3 at Delcastle Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
With the score tied 3-3, the match came down to the only singles matches to go three sets; the sixth flight, which USciences had won on Tuesday in three sets.
Stephanie Mazurek won the opening set 6-2, but her opponent came back to win the final two, 6-3, 6-3, to deny the Devils a spot in the CACC Championship match for the first time since 2005.
University of the Sciences' league season comes to an end in the CACC Semifinals for a sixth year in a row.
USciences flipped the doubles point thanks to Mazurek and Han Le at the third flight. After losing in a tiebreaker three days ago, the pair prevailed 6-4 to secure the point with their team-best fifth victory of the season.
The Devils were in that position thanks to Myra Anwar and Kirsten Wijnsema, who went one game better than their 7-5 triumph on Tuesday, winning 6-4 to answer the Rams' first flight victory.
University of the Sciences still needed to flip one more result from Tuesday and that came from Charlotte Kordonowy, who quickly put the Devils up 2-0.
After winning the first set at No. 2 singles, 6-2, her opponent was forced to retire, as the CACC Rookie of the year now has a team-best six victories this year.
Jefferson won No. 1, 4 and 5 singles once again, this time in straight sets, to quickly turnaround the score-line and take a 3-2 advantage.
Needing to win the final two matches, Rosemary Esquivel gave USciences life by evening the score at 3-3 with her third consecutive straight-set victory at the third flight, this one by a 6-3, 6-2 score-line.
