PHILADELPHIA – Myka Williams' three-set triumph at No. 5 singles secured a hard-fought victory for USciences women's tennis over Post on Wednesday evening at the Hamlin Center.
The Devils swept the doubles point, which turned out to be the difference after both teams won three singles matches.
Stephanie Mazurek and Han Le won their team-best third match together this season at the third flight, before Rosemary Esquivel and Charlotte Kordonowy and Williams and Myra Anwar both improved to 2-1 with respective first and second-flight victories.
Mazurek then gave University of the Sciences a quick 2-0 lead by sweeping No. 6 singles for her 30th career win, now tied for sixth in program history.
Post tied the score back up at 2-2 though with straight-set victories at the first and fourth flight, before Wijnsema brought the Devils within a point of victory with a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles to tie for the team-lead with three wins.
Williams did not drop a game in the first set before losing the second 3-6. She responded soundly by a 6-1 score-line in the third to secure the victory.
Esquivel almost made the margin of three points, falling in three close sets – 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 – at No. 5 singles.
University of the Sciences plays on back-to-back days this weekend, beginning with Saturday's match at Goldey-Beacom.
