WILMINGTON, Del. – For the second match in a row the USciences women's tennis team used a three-set triumph to secure a 4-3 victory, this one coming on Saturday afternoon at Goldey-Beacom.
This one was by Myra Anwar at No. 5 singles, the lone match to go three sets on the day.
The junior took the first set 6-3 and after getting edged 5-7 in the second, she prevailed in the final set 6-4 to propel the Devils into second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) standings.
USciences may not have been at that point if not for amazing perseverance by Charlotte Kordonowy and Rosemary Esquivel at No. 1 doubles, which determined who won the point and was not decided until the pair came out on top in an incredible 17-15 tiebreaker.
After GBC swept No. 3 doubles the Devils needed to win the final two matches for the point, which they accomplished beginning with Anwar's and Kirsten Wijnsema's 6-3 victory at the second flight.
That was their first dual-pairing this season, while Kordonowy and Esquivel are now a team-best 3-1.
Goldey-Beacom actually won the first two doubles matches to finish to momentarily take the lead, but Kordownowy won her team-best fourth singles match, at the first flight, to tie the score at 2-2.
Stephanie Mazurek then evened the score back up at 3-3 with a straight-set win in her first appearance at No. 4 singles to move into sole possession of sixth in program history with her 31st career victory.
That set the stage for Anwar, who prevailed in her first appearance in No. 5 singles.
University of the Sciences plays its lone non-conference match of the fall tomorrow, hosting District of Columbia at 1 p.m.
