Late Goldey-Beacom Run Denies Men's Basketball 3-0 CACC Start

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA- USciences men's basketball fell victim to a late 8-1 Goldey-Beacom run over the final 1:40, denying the Devils a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) start after a 64-60 loss to the Lightning on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.

University of the Sciences matched its largest advantage of the afternoon when Austin Kennedy broke a 56-56 tie on a 3-pointer with 2:37 remaining.

The Devils would score just one more point though, turning the ball over after a defensive stop to allow Godley to pull within one on two free throws, before a layup with 1:11 left gave the Lightning the lead back.

Joemel McNair's free throw 17 seconds later momentarily tied the score back up at 60, but GBC grabbed an offensive rebound and made a foul shot of their own to go back on top by one with 39 seconds to play.

University of the Sciences turned the ball over yet again but still had a chance after the Lightning only made one-of-two free throws, only to turn the ball over once more with four seconds to go.

This time Goldey-Beacom would ice the game by making two-of-two free throws, bringing their total made foul shots to the amount that the Devils attempted, 15.

McNair led University of the Sciences with 13 points, and was joined in double-figures by both Tommy Gardler and Omari Salvi with 11 each.

Garlder had a team-best five rebounds, while Salvi blocked a game-high two shots.

Kennedy led the Devils with four assists.

Goldey-Beacom built a game-high eight-point lead, 19-11, with 9:27 to go in the first half, but McNair scored six points in a 13-2 run that gave USciences its first three-point advantage, 24-21, on a Gardler 3-pointer 3:28 ahead of the break.

A Salvi triple 1:55 later also put the Devils up three, 27-24, but the Lightning would score the final four points of the half to take a one point lead into the locker room.

The two teams traded six lead changes in the first three minutes of a second half that was played within five points, the final one putting the Lightning on top 36-35 with 17 minutes remaining.

Despite tying the game five times, University of the Sciences could not re-gain an advantage until two Sean Simon free throws made the score 56-54 with 3:27 to play.

Goldey-Beacom responded to tie it up 20 seconds later, before Kennedy would then make his go-ahead 3-pointer.

University of the Sciences closes out a three-game home-stand next Saturday, hosting its final non-conference contest at 2 p.m. versus No. 18 Fairmont State.
