FLUSHING, N.Y. – Charlotte Kordonowy and Kirsten Wijnsema both won a match in singles play, while Han Le and Stephanie Mazurek paired for a doubles triumph at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center over the weekend.
In her first collegiate match, Kordonowy won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, over an opponent from Molloy, while Wijnsema – a sophomore - had to overcome a second set defeat before rolling 10-3 in her third-set super-tiebreaker against a challenger from New Haven.
Rosemary Esquivel nearly made it three Devils to advance to the Round of 32, winning the first set before falling by the narrowest of margins, 8-10, to another opponent from Molloy in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Kordonowy and Wijnsema, both making their first appearance at ITAs, both had to play seeded opponents in the Round of 32, with Kordonowy taking the first set from the number 14 seed from Franklin Pierce, before succumbing in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Wijnsema fell in straight sets to the number three seed from Stonehill.
In doubles play, the upperclassman duo of Le and Mazurek worked their way into the main draw with an 8-6 play-in win over a twosome from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Dominican.
Wijnsema and partner Myra Anwar nearly picked up a win themselves, falling in a tiebreaker to a pair from Queens.
In Le's and Mazurek's Round of 32 matchup, the two could not overcome another duo from Queens in a 5-8 loss.
Women's tennis opens its dual and CACC season next Saturday at above-mentioned Dominican.
