Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Sean Simon's Division II-era program record nine 3-pointers were not quite enough. Nor was a 17-point comeback, as the USciences men's basketball team fell 95-91 to Felician on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.
The nine triples were one shy of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Division II-era record. They were also tied for the 10th-most by a Division II student-athlete this season.
Simon made 9-of-14 3-point attempts en route to leading all players with a career-high 32 points. The senior ended the afternoon fifth in program history with 149 career trifectas.
In addition to the 17-point deficit, University of the Sciences held just one lead.
The Devils were in it until the very end though, tying the game twice in the final 2:28 with another opportunity to knot the score in the final seconds.
Trailing 84-76 with just under four and a half minutes to play, Simon began and ended an 11-3 run with 3-pointers that tied the score at 87 with 2:28 remaining.
It was the first time the score had been tied since USciences' first and only lead, 63-62, came on two free throws with 12:14 to play.
Felician answered on the next trip down the court, and the Golden Falcons built three other eight-point advantages prior to going ahead 84-76.
Felician also responded to Simon's 3-pointer that tied it, only to have Austin Kennedy knot the score back up at 89 with 1:42 left.
The Golden Falcons then hit a 3-pointer that Kennedy answered with a 2-pointer, before taking a three-point advantage with just 29 seconds remaining.
With an opportunity to tie once more, University of the Sciences turned the ball over but immediately stole it back, only to miss in the final seconds.
Felician (9-5, 4-2 CACC) would then go on to ice the game with a free throw.
Kennedy had the game's second-highest point total as the graduate student also set a new career-best with 26 points on 6-of-10 3-pointers.
University of the Sciences set a new recorded program record (since 2005-06) with 18 3-pointers as a team, breaking the previous record of 14. It was tied for the third-most triples in the CACC's Division II history.
Javon Gordon and Jaakko Juusela both set new season-highs with 12 and eight points, respectively, while Tommy Gardler was also in double-figures with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
USciences' 91 points surpassed its previous season-best of 84. The Devils also shot a season-best 53.2 percent from the field, as well as 51.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Felician shot even better though, 59.4 and 56.3 percent, while holding a 48-22 edge in points in the paint.
Gordon recorded his first career double-double with a career and game-high 10 rebounds, while also leading all players with a season-high five assists. Both he and Simon tied career-bests with a team-high three steals.
Felician led by 15 8:39 into the contest, and by a game-high 17, 41-24, with just 3:56 remaining in the first half.
The Golden Falcons were also leading by 15, 47-32, just 1:28 ahead of the break before USciences closed strong with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Gordon, Simon and Kennedy making it a two-possession game, 47-41, entering the locker room.
The Devils then carried that momentum out of the locker room as Simon was fouled shooting a triple, before knocking down all three free throws to make it a one-possession game for the first time since the 14:08 mark of the first half.
Felician was able to stretch its second half advantage to as many as nine, 56-47, with 17:20 remaining, but seven unanswered began a 16-6 run that gave USciences its first lead of the afternoon, 63-62, on Juusela's two foul shots with 12:14 to go.
University of the Sciences takes a week off before returning to action with a 3 p.m. tip at Caldwell next Saturday.
