PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's women's basketball kicks off its 2022-23 campaign on Monday evening, taking on Bucknell in the home and season opener inside Hagan Arena.
 
ABOUT SAINT JOSEPH'S:
  • Saint Joseph's steps on the hardwood for the first time since March, the Hawks coming off a deep run in the Atlantic 10 Tournament that saw them knocked out in the A-10 Semis.
  • The Hawks, under the tenure of Cindy Griffin, have gotten off to a quick start in a majority of seasons over the last 21 years. Griffin holds a 16-5 record overall at Saint Joseph's in the home opener, winning the last three in a row.
  • St. Joe's returns three from last year's Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, including the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Talya Brugler. Mackenzie Smith and Julia Nyström also return, the three of them combining for 25 points per game.
  • Katie Jekot begins her sixth season on Hawk Hill, using her extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jekot earned preseason Second Team All-Conference honors prior to the start of the year, joining Brugler who earned Third Team plaudits.
  • The Hawks welcome newcomer Paula Maurina on campus after spending the last two seasons at Hartford. Last year's All-NEC Second Team recipient tallied 13 points and 3.9 rebounds per game over the course of last season's campaign.
 
ABOUT BUCKNELL:
  • Bucknell enters its season after a successful 2021-22 campaign, runners up in the Patriot League Tournament before a second round exit in the WNIT to Drexel after defeating Fordham in the first round.
  • The Bison lose three of their top scorers from last year's squad, Cecelia Collins leading the returners with 11.1 points per game.
  • Only losing 17 games in the last three years, 12 of them have came on the road for the Bison.
