Box Score PHILADELPHIA – In a second half played within five points, the USciences men's basketball team came up on the wrong end of a 66-65 score-line against Nyack on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.
Trailing 66-63 entering the final minute, Austin Kennedy's layup got the Devils within one before he would go on to draw a charge on the ensuing trip down the court.
University of the Sciences missed a potential go-ahead basket with six seconds remaining, but the Devils would grab the offensive rebound before a foul resulted in a one-and-one at the free throw line with four seconds showing.
The first foul shot was missed and after two Nyack free throws rimmed out following a foul, a half-court heave at the buzzer would not fall.
Free throw shooting played a major role in the outcome in the game, with the Warriors making 22-of-31 compared to USciences' 1-of-7.
The Devils shot a season-best 54.0 percent from the floor (27-of-50), compared to Nyack's 42.6 (20-of-47).
Sean Simon tied for a game-high with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench, all of which came from beyond the arc.
The senior notably became the fifth student-athlete in program history to surpass 150 career 3-pointers with the performance.
Zachary Foley added a season-best 15 points on 6-of-9 field goals off the bench, including making 3-of-4 triples. He added a team-high six rebounds to go along with five assists.
Those two combined to outscore the Nyack bench 33-11.
Matthew McCaffrey also tied a season-best with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Kennedy contributed nine points and game-highs of six assists and three steals.
Nyack jumped out to a game-high eight-point lead twice, the second time on a layup that made the score 14-6 6:01 in. The Warriors maintained that advantage and were still up by seven after a 3-pointer with 5:18 to play in the first half.
Simon took over from there, making four trifectas in the span of 1:29 to put USciences ahead 33-30 3:42 ahead of the break.
Kennedy then scored the Devils' final seven points of the half, including a buzzer-beating triple that made the score 40-35 entering the locker room.
Both teams led by as many as five in the second half, with McCaffrey's layup 1:39 out of the break putting USciences ahead 42-37.
Following six ties and five lead changes, Nyack established its own five-point advantage, 64-59, with 5:19 to go.
The Devils got within one, 64-63, on a Jordan Davidson layup 1:06 later, before the Warriors scored their final two points with 3:16 remaining.
University of the Sciences begins a three-game road-trip at Wilmington on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
