Owen Petrich Named Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week

WASHINGTON – Saint Joseph's junior third baseman Owen Petrich has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

Petrich was on fire last weekend as the Hawks took two out of three in a top-of-the-table series against Davidson.  He started the series off with a two-run home run in the first inning on Thursday as the Hawks opened the set with a 6-5 win.  The Doylestown, Pennsylvania, native then matched a program record with three home runs on Friday as the Hawks rallied furiously but could not complete the comeback, falling a run short.

Then, in a wild series finale on Saturday, the Hawks went down 8-0 in the second inning before eventually invoking the mercy rule in a 25-15 seven-inning triumph; Petrich was right there in the middle of it, going 4-for-4 with two walks, two doubles, a home run, five runs scored, and five runs batted in.  His third-inning home run got the Hawks back within three, and his RBI double brought home the first of 13 runs the Hawks scored in the pivotal sixth inning.  He then drove in two more runs in the seventh before scoring the game-ending run on a passed ball.

For the weekend, Petrich collected eight hits, scored nine runs, drove in 11, and totaled five home runs; he posted a .615 batting average, a .667 on-base percentage, and a 1.923 slugging percentage to go with an astronomical 2.538 OPS.

Petrich and the Hawks return to action on Tuesday at Delaware before hosting Dayton in a three-game conference set beginning on Friday.
