PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tim Begley scored 16 points and Mark Zoller and Ibrahim
Jaaber each had 13 to lead Penn to a 67-59 win over Saint Joseph's on Tuesday
night at the Palestra.
Steve Danley capped the emotional win with a big dunk in the final minute,
sending the Penn student section into a frenzy and putting an exclamation point
on the Quakers' first win over the Hawks in three years.
The Quakers (7-7) snapped St. Joe's 10-game Big 5 winning streak, dating
back to Feb. 2, 2002. Penn improved to 2-2 this year in the city series.
Pat Carroll scored 17 points and Chet Stachitas added 13 for the Hawks
(8-8). After starting January with four straight wins, St. Joe's has lost two of three and are 1-1 in the Big 5.
The Hawks used a couple of mini-runs in the second half to get back into the
game after Penn seemed poised to turn it into a rout early. Hawks' forward
Robert Ferguson continued to look like more of a reliable option off the bench,
scoring six points in 13-2 run to cut Penn's lead to 60-56.
Saint Joe's Dwayne Jones missed three of four free throws, costing SJU
a chance to pull within one, and Penn held on for a win on its home court.
Penn led by 17 in the first half before the Hawks pulled within six in the
opening minutes of the second on a Stachitas 3-pointer. But Begley answered
with his own three and Danley sank all three free throws after he was fouled on a
3-point attempt to key a 13-5 run and push the lead to 14.
Hawks' coach Phil Martelli was whistled for a technical, allowing Begley to sink two free throws
to give Penn a 54-41 lead.
Penn went 6-for-15 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Hawks 40-35. The
Quakers also scored 11 points off nine Hawks turnovers.
Penn hit four 3-pointers while racing to a 30-13 lead to open the game. The
Quakers hot shooting leveled off, though, and they went the last 3:55 of the
half without a field goal. Stachitas scored seven points in a 13-5 run and
St. Joe's closed to 35-26 at halftime.
