The Charlotte 49ers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team and never trailed as the Hawks dropped their first Atlantic 10 game of the season, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.
Charlotte opened the scoring in the 5th minute as Nikki Labuda took a pass from teammate Rachel Mees and beat Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Jen Kuhn to put the 49ers up 1-0. Mees extended the 49ers' lead to 2-0 two minutes later, taking a pass from Lindsey Ozimek and burying it into the back of the netting.
Labuda's second goal of the game, coming in the 19th minute, put Charlotte up for good as Ozimek and Brittany Dursch assisted on the goal.
Saint Joseph's did get on the board in the 25th minute as sophomore Laura Adams scored off a pass from senior Ali Wean. Unfortunately for the Hawks, their offense would not find the back of the net over the remaining 65 minutes.
For the game, Saint Joseph's out shot the 49ers 18-11 and held a 3-2 edge in corners. Individually, Kuhn made five saves in the loss, while Juli Black made a game-high six at the other end for Charlotte.
At the other end, Hudson made two saves for Richmond, while Jesse Wolfe led the team with five shots.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play and 4-7-0 on the season. The 49ers improve to 2-0 in A-10 play and 7-3-2 on the year.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday, October 6 when it hosts Temple at 7 p.m.
