Women's Soccer Falls At Saint Louis, 4-3, In Overtime

ST. LOUIS, MO - Trailing by as many as two, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team fought back to tie the game in the final minutes to force overtime at Saint Louis. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Billikens scored six minutes into the extra frame to earn a 4-3 win Friday evening.

With the game tied at three, Saint Joseph's got the first opportunity to end the game in the extra frame as freshman Sarah O'Malley headed a shot, only to have it saved by Saint Louis' Saint Louis' Hannah Koesterer.

At the other end, Saint Louis took advantage of its first scoring opportunity as Kelly Waeckerle took a pass from Dee Guempel and beat the Hawks' freshman goalkeeper Megan Bastanelli from 14-yards out 6:31 into overtime for the Saint Louis victory.

In the first half, the Billikens took a 1-0 lead at 25:10 on a goal by Waeckerle. With the ball pressed deep in SJU's end, Saint Louis' Maureen Hughes got the ball deep and drilled a shot that Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Jen Kuhn was able to stop. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Hughes gathered the rebound and found an open Waeckerle who scored on an open net from two yards out.

Saint Louis upped its lead to 2-0 at 40:23 as Lauren Bozesky's shot from 25 yards out beat Kuhn.

Trailing by two, Saint Joseph's was able to cut into the deficit right before halftime as senior forward Ali Wean picked off a pass deep in the Saint Louis zone and scored from 12-yards out at 42:37.

The Hawks evened the score at two all early 10 minutes into the second half as Wean took advantage of a Billiken foul inside the box. On the ensuing penalty shot, Wean beat Koesterer at 55:54.

Saint Louis regained the lead in the 86th minute, as Julia Brandenberg beat Bastanelli to the low far post.

With only a few minutes remaining, Saint Joseph's tied the game as senior Nancy Cook took a pass from classmate Kaiti McCaffery and beat Koesterer to the far post from 12 yards out at 87:15 forcing the overtime session.

For the game, the Billikens held a 36-9 edge in shots with both teams recording five corners apiece.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in A-10 play. Saint Louis improves to 9-3-2 on the year and 4-2 in conference games.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, October 22 at Duquesne.
