Junior Daniel Thorpe scattered seven hits over six innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six, but the Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped the finale of its series at VCU, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. Senior Greg Kumpel had two hits for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's (2-4) had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the first, but the Rams' Ryan Farrar escaped the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.
VCU (5-0) went ahead in the bottom of the inning, getting a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Chris Ayers and Vimael Machin to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Hawks had first and third once again with two outs in the sixth after a Kumpel single and an error, but Farrar once again got a strikeout to end the threat.
Anthony Cirillo singled in the top of the seventh to extend his hitting streak to six; he has hit safely in each of SJU's games this season.
Farrar allowed three hits and one walk while striking out six, improving to 2-0. Seth Greene pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the year.
Thorpe fell to 0-1 on the season. Jack Stover and Jimmy Yacabonis combined for two innings of scoreless relief on the afternoon.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Friday, March 1, for the first of four games at nationally ranked Mississippi State. First pitch from Starkville is set for 7:30 p.m.
