Chris Hueth had three hits on the afternoon, including a pair of doubles, and Quinn Renner drove in three runs, but the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Marist, 6-4, on Friday afternoon at Smithson Field. The loss, SJU's first at home this season, snapped a four-game winning streak.
Marist (5-7) took the lead in the top of the first, capitalizing on three walks and a single by Mike Orefice to jump out to a 1-0 advantage.
Saint Joseph's (6-11) equalized in the second as Hueth led off with a double, advanced to third on an infield single by Anthony Cirillo, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Renner.
The Red Foxes went back in front in the third as Orefice added an RBI double and came around to score on a wild pitch, giving Marist a 3-1 edge.
The Hawks cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Stefan Kancylarz led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Muha.
SJU went ahead for the first time in the fourth inning. Hueth once again led off with a double and advanced to third on a fly ball by John Brue. After Cirillo was hit by a pitch, Renner followed with a double to the gap in left center to plate both runners and give the Hawks a 4-3 lead.
In the seventh, however, Zach Passarelle hit a one-out double to score two runs and put Marist back on top, 5-4.
The Red Foxes added a run in the eighth on a double by Nick McQuail to set the final margin.
Chris Bielak improved to 3-1 for Marist, tossing six and two-thirds innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Kevin McCarthy pitched the final two and a third innings for his first save of the season.
Kyle Mullen (2-3) took the loss for SJU, allowing five runs, four earned, on just six hits. Mullen struck out four but was hurt by five walks and two hit batsmen.
Hueth finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Renner was 1-for-3 with three runs batted in. Kancylarz and Kevin Kratochwill added two hits apiece for the Hawks.
