AMHERST, Mass. - For the first time in program history, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team is 2016 Atlantic 10 regular season champions as the Hawks earned a 2-1 snow-shortened victory at Massachusetts on Thursday.
Playing through snow squalls, the Hawks battled back from an early deficit to improve to 8-0-1 in the A-10 and secure the top seed in next week's A-10 Championship. Additionally, Saint Joseph's extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games as it moved to 15-1-2 on the season and sophomore forward Dakota Mills matched the team's single-season mark for goals (14) and points (33)
In the contest, the Minutewomen (3-10-3, 1-6-2 A-10) jumped out to a 1-0 as Jackie Miller scored from six yards out at 28:16.
Mills answered a short time later at 38:29 as she took a crossing pass from rookie Gabrielle Vagnozzi.
After going to halftime tied, SJU junior Lauren Dimes gave her team a 2-1 lead just 5:18 into the second period off a feed from Mills.
The Hawks would maintain their lead from there before the referees ended the contest at 70:26 due to heavy snow impacting play.
For the game, SJU finished with a 14-6 edge in shots with both teams earning two corner kicks apiece.
With her goal, Mills joins senior Emily Gingrich and Ali Wean atop the single-season goal mark and matched Wean's single-season record for points. In net, sophomore Grace Bendon improved to 4-0-0 with the win.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday when it wraps up the regular season at home versus St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. The Hawks will honor their senior class - Gingrich, Meghan DiPippa, and Shannon Mulvey - prior to the start of the game.
