KINGSTON, R.I. - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team is headed to the Atlantic 10 championship game as the top seed Hawks downed fourth seed George Mason, 5-2, Friday evening in a semifinal matchup at the URI Soccer Complex.

Saint Joseph's (18-1-2) will face seven seed Dayton in the title game on Sunday at noon. The game will be nationally televised on the American Sports Network.

Making just their second appearance ever in the A-10 semifinals, the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from senior Shannon Mulvey and freshman Gabrielle Vagnozzi. 

Mulvey opened the scoring at 15:29 as she controlled a rebound off her own shot and delivered a shot that found the netting inside the left post to make it 1-0.

Less than seven minutes later Vagnozzi made it 2-0 off a strike from 20 yards out as junior Lauren Dimes and sophomore Michaela Finneyfrock picked up assists.

Saint Joseph's extended its lead to 3-0 at 51:07 as A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Dakota Mills took a centering pass from Mulvey and beat the goalkeeper from inside to box.

George Mason (13-7-1) fought back to make it just a one-goal match with under 15 minutes to play. Abby Downey got the Patriots on the board at 73:20 and an own goal by SJU made it 3-2 at 75:17.

Dimes quickly got the momentum back for the Hawks though as she took a centering pass from Vagnozzi and found the back of the net to make it 4-2 at 76:50.

Mills capped the scoring for SJU with an insurance goal at 87:02 to secure the victory.

For the game, Saint Joseph's finished with a 15-13 edge in shots, while the Patriots held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Individually, Mills picked up her 17th and 18th goals on the year and moved to 41 points. Vagnozzi's two assists pushed her total to 11, surpassing Emily Gingrich's single-season mark of nine set in 2014.

In net, sophomore Grace Bendon made five saves to earn the win and improve to 7-0-0.
