NEWARK, Del. - Saint Joseph's senior Emily Gingrich matched the women's soccer program record for career goals (33) and sophomore Dakota Mills tallied her second overtime game-winner of the season as the Hawks topped Delaware, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.
Coming off a strong showing at nationally-ranked Rutgers on Friday, Saint Joseph's (2-1-0) came out aggressive in the first half versus the Blue Hens. Despite out shooting Delaware, the Hawks found themselves tied at halftime, 0-0.
Gingrich would break the draw early in the second half, tallying her first goal of the season in the 59th minute. Dribbling past several Delaware defenders, the SJU midfielder got a clean look at the goal and drilled a shot to the upper third to put the Hawks ahead, 1-0, at 58:56.
With the goal, Gingrich matched Jen Pfeiffer (2008-11) and Mo Hawkins (2010-13) for Saint Joseph's all-time lead in goals.
Delaware (0-4-0) would tie the game late though as Dani Kabat's goal at 82:29 would eventually force overtime.
In the extra frame, Mills made the most of her opportunity in the 100th minute as she slipped past the defense and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to give the Hawks the 2-1 victory. Mills, who also tallied an overtime game-winner versus Seton Hall, upped her team lead in goals to three on the year.
For the game, Saint Joseph's finished with an 18-11 edge in shots, while Delaware finished with an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
In net, rookie Cameron Perrott made four saves to improve to 2-1-0 on the year.
The Hawks return to action on Friday when it hosts Towson at 5 p.m.
