PHILADELPHIA – Backed by 16 points from its 800m group, including the IC4A-qualifying trio of senior Steve Thompson, junior Dylan Eddinger, and senior Dan Ferraiolo, the Saint Joseph's men's track and field distance group compiled 25 points to place fifth in a field of six teams at the inaugural Temple Owls Invitational, held at the Temple University Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. The Hawks saw seven points come out of the 1500m and two additional points stem from the 5000m as SJU scored out of all three events in which it was represented.
Thompson dropped the second-fastest outdoor 800m time of his collegiate career on Friday afternoon, crossing in a season-best time of 1:51.28 to mark his fastest time in the outdoor 800m since May 2016. The performance was good for third overall in a field of 22 and second among collegiate racers as the senior standout earned six points for the Crimson and Gray.
Eddinger (1:53.44) and Ferraiolo (season-best 1:53.93) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, to combine for seven more points. Both times met IC4A qualification, with Ferraiolo's serving as his first IC4A-qualifying performance of the spring.
Senior Dave Garton (season-best 1:54.06) and freshman Stephen McClellan (1:54.19 PR) placed seventh and eighth for three more points.
Sophomore John Walker enjoyed a big day in the 1500m, crossing in a season-best time of 4:02.26 to finish fifth in a field of 19 and third among all collegiate racers. Walker scored his four points out of the second section, where he won his race.
Sophomore Zach Michon (4:02.91) and freshman Matthew Scarpill (4:05.62) placed seventh and eighth out of the first section for three more points.
David Dorsey ran his first 5000m race of the season in 15:20.63, which earned the senior seventh in a field of 14 for two points.
Additional Hawks return to action tomorrow, April 14, at the Rider Invitational. Start time at the Rider Track and Field Complex in Lawrenceville, N.J. is set for 11:00 a.m.
