Men's Basketball Pulls Away from Kutztown for First Win of Season in Road-Opener; First Victory Over Golden Bears Since 2014

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The USciences men's basketball team pulled away from Kutztown early in the second half en route to their first win over the Golden Bears, 94-84, since 2014 in the Devils' road-opener on Wednesday night.

Highlighting the performance was Connor Murphy's second straight double-double, as the freshman finished with game-highs of 21 points on 8-of-8 shooting and 17 rebounds in 40 minutes. 

The freshman helped spearhead a performance in which University of the Sciences outrebounded the Golden Bears 42-21, helping lead to a 20-4 edge in second-chance points.

Jordan White and Paddy Casey were not far behind with 19 points each on 6-of-12 shooting, while Brandon Starr made it four Devils in double-figures with 12 points in 18 minutes off the bench. 

Cameron Hoffman fell one point shy of making it five as he joined White in setting a new career-high in scoring with nine points.  

He made all four of his field goal attempts as the Devils shot 55.2 percent from the field (32-of-58), including 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. 

Sean Simon joined White in making 2-of-3 3-pointers and the sophomore led all players with a career-best six assists. 

Notably, Javon Gordon had a game-high three steals. 

USciences actually led by as many eight in the first half after a Starr 3-pointer made the score 25-17 with 9:04 showing, but aside from that the period half was played within two possessions and ended with the Devils on top 42-41 entering the break after nine ties and three lead changes. 

Kutztown scored six of the eight opening points out of the locker room to grab early momentum, but USciences took control of the game from there with 11 unanswered over 2:08. 

The stretch featured six Hoffman points and ended when a White and-one put the Devils ahead 55-47 just 3:26 out of the locker room. 

That was the beginning of seven White points over 1:18 that culminated in a dunk to complete a 17-2 surge for a 61-49 advantage with 14:56 to play. 

The advantage reached as high as 15, 66-51, when JJ Melchior made a free throw to completed a 22-4 stretch with 10:58 left. 

From the lead would remain in double-digits until the 5:28 mark, but Kutztown could not make it a two-possession game again until he final minute. 

When the Golden Bears did, University of the Sciences made 6-of-6 free throws over the final 57 seconds to hold them off and secure the victory. 

The Devils finished the night 23-of-29 from the line (79.3 percent).

University of the Sciences returns home to open a three-game home-stand next Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. against Lincoln.
