Baseball Falls at George Washington, 10-4

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team saw its unbeaten start to the conference slate come to an end on Saturday afternoon as George Washington came away with a 10-4 win at Barcroft Park.

The Hawks struck first, as a pair of walks and a wild pitch were followed by a Dominic Cuoci sacrifice fly in the top of the first.

The Colonials answered immediately, however, plating three in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Noah Levin and a single by Derek Ripp.

Nate Fassnacht drove in the next three runs of the game with a two-run single in the second and a triple in the fourth to extend GW's lead to 6-1.

Saint Joseph's (11-12 overall, 4-1 Atlantic 10) got back into the game in the top of the sixth.  Nate Thomas led off with a single before Andrew Cossetti was hit by a pitch two batters later.  Kadar Namey followed with a double to score Thomas and chase starter Brady Renner.

Jake Artz then hit into a fielder's choice to drive in Cossetti before a single by Matt Cuppari scored Artz and brought the Hawks back within a pair at 6-4.

Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, George Washington (15-11 overall, 2-3 Atlantic 10) got all three back and then some in the home half of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors and two hits to plate four runs and put the game effectively out of reach.

Renner tossed five and a third innings and allowed four runs on four hits and four walks to improve to 2-1 for the Colonials.  Matt Kennedy took the loss for the Hawks, falling to 3-1 after being charged with five runs in an inning-plus.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series at noon on Sunday.
