Box Score LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The University of the Sciences men's basketball team broke a deadlock in the final minutes with a late run that propelled the Devils to a 78-74 triumph at Georgian Court on Wednesday night.
In a second half that was played within two possessions, the two teams found themselves tied at 61-61 entering the final four and a half minutes.
That is when USciences made its move, beginning with Connor Murphy's jumper that came after a Thomas Melonja offensive rebound to break the deadlock with 4:06 remaining and give Devils the lead for good.
Murphy then had a steal and fastbreak layup, before Sean Simon's layup capped six unanswered with 3:03 left to play to make it a two-possession game for good.
Following a Georgian Court free throw, Jordan White's 3-pointer 50 seconds later capped a 9-1 surge, and USciences would close out the victory by making eight of its next 10 free throws.
White made the final two to cap a performance in which he led all players with 28 points, one shy of a career-best, on 9-of-15 field goals and a perfect 7-of-7 foul shots.
Simon came off the bench to score 22 points, including 4-of-5 3-pointers to became the 11th player in program history to surpass 100 career triples.
Georgian Court had 24 more field goal attempts, but University of the Sciences needed 13 less 3-point attempts (28-15) to make one less trifecta (9-8), and the Devils made more free throws than the Lions attempted (season-high 22-13).
Murphy recorded his second straight double-double and ninth this season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Melonja (season-best) and Paddy Casey each had a team-high four assists.
Georgian Court tied the contest's largest advantage, 30-21, 5:54 ahead of the half with seven straight points, only to have USciences tie the score for a third time when a White dunk capped nine unanswered with 2:33 showing.
Murphy's three-point play 1:50 later gave the Devils their second lead, 37-36, but the Lions would hit two free throws three seconds before the buzzer to take a one-point advantage into the locker room.
University of the Sciences scored six of the first eight points in the second half to take its final lead, 43-40, until the 5:49 mark when on a Casey layup 1:48 into the period, as Georgian Court would respond with eight unanswered.
University of the Sciences returns to New Jersey this Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip at Felician.
