Box Score PHILADELPHIA – In a game played within two possessions until the final six seconds, it was Holy Family using a late surge to pull away from men's basketball for an 89-84 win on Tuesday night at Bobby Morgan Arena.
The contest featured 16 lead changes and 11 ties, with both team's largest lead reaching six until the Tigers hit two free throws with just six seconds left.
USciences' largest advantage, 61-55, came when Jordan White converted a three-point play with 13:38 remaining, and it was his layup that also put the Devils up 75-71 with 6:43 to go.
Holy Family would answer with an 11-2 run though, that ended on a layup to make the score 82-77 with 3:03 to play.
Thomas Melonja hit a jumper 26 seconds later and Sean Simon's layup with 1:33 showing made it a one score game, but after two HFU free throws and a Devils turnover, a clutch Tigers 3-pointer with just 26 second remaining proved to be the dagger.
University of the Sciences actually set a new season-high by making four more 3-pointers than Holy Family, 14-10, but in a game in which the Tigers made just one more field goal, 34-33, it was HFU making seven more free throws (11-4) that turned out to be the final difference.
White led USciences with 26 points on 10-of-17 field goals and nine rebounds to fall just shy of his third career double-double.
Connor Murphy also fell one board shy of a double-double, his fourth straight, with 10 points, five assists and a game and season-high three steals.
Paddy Casey tied his season-best with 19 points, while nearing a triple-double with eight rebounds and a team-high six assists.
The junior made 5-of-7 3-pointers to move into ninth in program history with 121 for his career.
The trio helped University of the Sciences outrebound Holy Family 42-36, and the Devils set a new season-best with 24 assists.
Melonja and Simon made it five Devils in double-figures with 11 points each.
University of the Sciences hosts Wilmington in its home-finale this Saturday at 3 p.m. Prior to tip the Devils will honor the senior class of Devan Rodman, Tom Gregorits and JJ Melchior.
