Fordham Sweeps Doubleheader From Saint Joseph's Softball

EAST NORRITON, PA - The Saint Joseph's dropped its Atlantic 10 opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to Fordham 8-4 and 10-6 in 12 innings at East Norriton field.

In the opener, Fordham jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third behind an Allison Storc solo homerun and a Katie Davis three-run shot.

The Rams jumped up to 5-0 in the top of the fourth in a RBI single by Davis.

Saint Joseph's would rally in the bottom of the fifth, plating four runs to cut the deficit to one, 5-4. With the bases loaded and two outs, senior shortstop Cara Deldeo drilled a grand slam to bring the Hawks within one.

Unfortunatley for Saint Joseph's, Fordham would add a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to hold on to a 8-4 win.

In the nightcap, it took extra innings to decide the winner.

Saint Joseph's took advantage of earlier Fordham errors to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

Fordham would tally two in the second and tie it in the top of the sixth with two runs.

Saint Joseph's regained in the bottom of the sixth on a Rachel Pawlikowski solo home run.

Unfortunatley in the top of the seventh, the Rams rallied to tie the score at five with a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Allison Twarowski.

Fordham would gain its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth with a solo homerun by Twarowski.

The Hawks tied in the bottom half of the inning as Jill Clementi drilled a RBI single to right field, scoring Megan Richardson.

After a scorless 10th and 11th, the Rams tallied four runs in the top of the 12th to take a 10-6 lead.

The Hawks failed to score in the bottom of the inning as the Rams held on to the 10-6 win.

Sophomore Lauren Hughes was the hard-luck loser in the nightcap, allowing nine runs on 10 hits, while striking out 10 on 216 pitches. Freshman Lauren Cognigni fell in the opener allowing eight runs, seven earned, while striking out four.

With the losses, the Hawks fall to to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in A-10 play. Fordham improves to 12-10 overall and 4-0 in the A-10 with the sweep.

Saint Joseph;s returns to action tuesday when it hosts Monmouth for a doubleheader.
