EAST NORRITON, PA -
The bad news for the Saint Joseph's softball team was it was no-hit in the nightcap. The good news, the Hawks managed to win 1-0 and sweep the series versus the Dragons Wednesday at East Norriton Field.
In game two, Saint Joseph's failed to record a single hit as Krista Van Wert and Amanda Heyser combined for the no-hitter. Despite the solid pitching, Drexel's defense faltered at times, committing five errors.
The Hawks took advantage of Drexel's mistakes in the bottom of the second as senior Alicia Cunic would score the games only run off a Lynn Ravert sacrifice fly.
On the mound, sophomore Lauren Hughes was solid for the Hawks, giving up only one hit while stiking out five. The right-handed hurler improved to 4-9 on the year with the complete game shutout.
In the opener, Drexel jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a RBI bloop-single off the bat of Heyser.
Trailing by one, the SJU bats came alive in the bottom of the third for four runs. Junior Jill Clementi drilled the biggest blow, sending a three-run home run over the left-center wall to put the Hawks up 3-1.
Saint Joseph's would add an insurance run in the fifth as freshman hurler Lauren Cognigni improved to 7-6 on the season. Cognigni allowed one run on eight hits, while stiking out three.
With the victories, the Hawks improve to 11-15 overall, while Drexel falls to 12-12.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Massachusetts.
