AMHERST, MA -
The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a pair of Atlantic 10 games at Massachusetts Friday, falling 8-3 in the opener and 13-1 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Jill Clementi drilled a RBI double down the left field line. Clementi would come around to score on a wild pitch and error by Massachusetts' catcher.
Despite leading 2-0 into the third, the Minutewomen's bats began to connect in the third, as Massachusetts tied the game at two apiece.
The Minutewomen added three runs in the bottom of the fourth and would add three more in the sixth to hold on to an 8-3 win.
Saint Joseph's freshman hurler Lauren Cognigni was the hard-luck loser, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out one. She falls to 7-7 on the season with the loss.
In the nightcap, Massachusetts' bats continued to pop.
Saint Joseph's got on the board first, as senior Alicia Cunic scored on an error by Massachusetts' third baseman.
Unfortunatley for the Hawks, that would be thier only run of the game, as the Minutewomen plated nine in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth to pull away to a 13-1 win.
Sophomore pitcher Lauren Hughes fell to 4-10 on the season with the loss.
Saint Joseph's falls to 11-17 overall and 0-4 in the Atlantic 10. Massachusetts improves to 20-11-1 and 6-2 in conference play.
The Hawks will try to bounce back Sunday when they travel to Kingston, RI for a doubleheader with the Rams.
