April 25, 2005

Box Score

DAYTON, OH - The Saint Joseph's softball team kept its postseason hopes alive Monday, halving a doubleheader at Dayton. The Hawks fell 4-0 in the opener, but won the nightcap 1-0.

Saint Joseph's, who entered today's doubleheader sixth in the A-10 standings, won a must-win game in the nightcap 1-0.

In the second contest, the Hawks got on the board in the top of the first as Alicia Cunic (Allentown, PA/Parkland) hit a RBI single to put SJU up 1-0.

The lone run would be all the offense the SJU would need sophomore hurler Lauren Hughes (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) was dominant. Hughes allowed six hits, while striking out four for the complete-game shutout to improve to 6-10 on the year.

In the opener, Dayton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom on the first. The Flyers' Tamsyn Kellough drilled a two-RBI double off of Saint Joseph's freshman pitcher Lauren Cognigni.

The Hawks had a chance to answer in the top of the second as they loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately for SJU, Dayton's Tami Roudebush caught Saint Joseph's Cara Deldeo out at home on a force play to end the threat.

The Flyers extended their lead to three in the bottom of the fourth as Cassie Gross hit a solo home run over the leftfield wall.

On the mound for Dayton, Melissa Myher gave up eight hits, but held the Hawks scoreless, while her teammates added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Dayton prevailed 4-0.

Cognigni was the hard-luck loser for the Hawks, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three. She fell to 9-9 overall with the loss.

With the split, Saint Joseph's moves to 15-19 overall and 4-6 in the A-10. The Hawks, who are now tied for fifth in the A-10, trail Dayton by two games as the Flyers moved to 6-6 in conference play and 17-16-1 overall.

Saint Joseph's returns to action tomorrow, April 26, at Princeton. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
