Box Score

PRINCETON, NJ - Saint Joseph's pitchers sophomore Lauren Hughes and freshman Lauren Cognigni gave up a combined one run and eight hits over 14 innings of work as the Hawks' softball team swept a doubleheader at Princeton, 3-1 and 2-0.

In the opener, Cognigni gave up an early run in the bottom of the first but calmed down soon after. Cognigni shutdown Princeton, allowing only three hits over the final six innings and striking out four.

At the plate, Saint Joseph's got on the board in the top of the fourth. Senior shortstop Cara Deldeo (Dagsboro, DE/Indian River) smacked her fourth home run of the season, scoring classmate Alicia Cunic on the play to put the Hawks up 2-1.

Sophomore Rachel Pawlikowski followed Deldeo's shot with a double and would come around to score on a RBI single by junior Lynn Ann Ravert.

Cognigni snapped a two-game losing skid, as she earned the complete-game victory to improve to 10-9 on the season.

In the nightcap, Hughes continued her streak of dominant pitching. The 5-foot-7 hurler extended her scoreless-inning streak to 14 as she held the Tigers to only three hits over seven innings, while striking out two. Hughes earned the complete-game victory to improve to 7-10 on the year.

At the plate, the Hawks collected a run in the second and one in the seventh as Deldeo and freshman Carly Kinkler collected a RBI apiece.

Deldeo finished two-for-six on the day with three RBI and a run scored, while Pawlikowski went two-for-five with two runs scored.

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 17-19 overall, while Princeton falls to 33-16.

The Hawks return to action Friday, April 29, versus George Washington. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at East Norriton Field.
