PRINCETON, N.J. - Kevin McDonnell won the 3000-meter run and the team of James Gentile, Matthew McGarvey, Patrick Miller, and Dave Manion took home gold in the 4x800m relay as the Saint Joseph's men's track and field team competed at Princeton's New Year's Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The meet was held at Princeton University's Jadwin Gym.
McDonnell ran the 3000-meter race in a season-best 8:40.79 as he finished an entire 15.10 seconds in front of the event's second-place finisher.
The 4x800m relay team won its event in 8:01.66, 6.17 seconds faster than the event's second-place finishers, SJU's second 4x800 relay team. Senior captain Andrew Townsend, sophomore Steven Butenewicz, and freshmen Quinn Davis and Ryan Vance clocked in at 8:07.83 as the Hawks took two of the event's top-three spots.
Juniors James Rodgers (36.02*) and Derrick Henry (36.08*) and sophomore Brendan Robert (36.62) all won their sections in the 300-meter dash. Rodgers improved on his personal best in the event by .65 seconds while Henry's .10-second improvement also resulted in a new personal best. Both Rodgers and Henry set their prior personal bests in the 300-meter dash last weekend at Jack Pyrah.
The sophomore duo of Jonathan Eisemann (36.23*) and Tyler Gallen (37.51*) placed third in their respective sections.
Junior Griff Roberts took 1.17 seconds off of his previous personal best in the 600-meter run to place second in his section with a team-best 1:23.97*. Classmates Peter Larmann (1:25.20*) and Christopher Kinney (1:29.46*) both won their individual sections as they each competed in the event for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Sophomore Thomas Harrington ran the 1000-meter run in a team-best 2:41.45* to post the eighth-fastest time in the event.
The Hawks will return to action on Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Delaware Invitational in Newark, Del. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Delaware Field House.
