LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Sophomore middle distance standout Zach Michon won the 1500m and both the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay groups took home titles to lead the Saint Joseph's men's track and field squad to a second-place team finish in a field of six at the Rider 5-Way Meet, SJU's 2018 outdoor season opener. The Hawks accumulated 93 points on the afternoon.
Michon cruised through the 1500m in 3:55.19, edging out Rider's Danniel Belay by .11 seconds for the title in a field of 41. The performance qualifies Michon for the 2018 IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held at Princeton in May.
The Hawks also won with a 4x100m relay of sophomore David Bryant, senior David Henderson, freshman Sebastian Eaton, and senior Kenny Evely (42.62) and with a 4x400m relay of Henderson, sophomore Trae' Robinson, senior Dan Ferraiolo, and Evely (3:17.57), with the latter relay qualifying for IC4As.
Bryant added a second-place finish in the 100m (11.31) and third-place finish in the 200m (22.94 PR) for 14 points while sophomore Justin Moscoe placed second in the 400m (49.51 PR) for eight more points out of the sprints.
Freshman Stephen McClellan took third in the 800m (1:55.86) for six points.
The Hawks earned 20 points out of the 3000m as freshman Brendan Falzone (8:42.48), junior Justin Branco (8:44.12), graduate student Dan Savage (8:44.78 PR), and senior Anthony Morelli (8:47.55 PR) went second, third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
Also of note, Markell Lodge, who wrapped up his junior season with the varsity men's basketball team this winter, made his collegiate track and field debut on Saturday afternoon, turning in a high jump mark of 6' 4 1/4" to place fourth in a field of nine.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Thursday, April 5 through Saturday, April 7 at the 53rd Annual Berkeley Realty Colonial Relays, to be held at William and Mary's Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va. Events are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
