PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Steve Thompson placed fifth in the open 800m and anchored the third-place 4x800m relay to lead the Saint Joseph's men's track and field squad to a 24th-place finish in a field of 43 squads at the 2018 IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium this weekend. With four All-East performances out of the 800m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, and 4x800m relay, the Hawks accumulated 13 points for the two-day meet.
Saint Joseph's was the only program to score all three of its relays.
In his final collegiate open race, Thompson dropped a collegiate-best time of 1:50.93 for 800m to place fifth in a field of 53, edging out Army West Point's Nickolas Causey for the top-five finish and four points for the Crimson and Gray.
Thompson becomes just the third Hawk in program history to earn All-East honors in the outdoor 800m, joining Brian Guterl (4th in 2009) and Andrew Craycraft (2nd in 2002).
Thompson went on to anchor the 4x800m relay group of senior Dan Ferraiolo, junior Dylan Eddinger, and junior Rory Houston, who crossed in 7:33.63 to place third in a field of 14. The Hawks finished only behind race champion Army West Point (7:30.40) in their heat and did not have the opportunity to race runner-up Boston University (7:32.36).
SJU earned two more points out of its seventh-place 4x400m relay (3:14.60) of senior David Henderson, senior Kenny Evely, sophomore Justin Moscoe, and freshman Stephen McClellan while the 4x100m relay of sophomore David Bryant, freshman Sebastian Eaton, Henderson, and Evely scorched the track with a time of 41.56, just .02 seconds off from SJU's program record, en route to an eighth-place, one-point finish. The group won its heat over LIU Post by .20 seconds to become the first 4x100m relay in SJU program history to score at an IC4A outdoor meet.
With their top-eight finishes, Thompson, Ferraiolo, Eddinger, Houston, Henderson, Evely, Moscoe, McClellan, Bryant, and Eaton all earned All-East recognition, with seniors Thompson, Henderson, and Evely leading the way with a pair of All-East honors apiece.
Of note out of the non-scoring, individual performances, McClellan ran a season-best 1:53.54 for 800m to place 25th while sophomores Zach Michon (3:51.46), John Waker (3:53.65 PR), and Christian Roberts (3:53.98) placed 10th, 15th, and 17th, respectively, in the 1500m. In their final collegiate races, senior David Dorsey went 31:42.36 for 10k while graduate student Dan Savage ran the 3000m steeplechase in 9:19.95.
The meet officially concludes the 2018 outdoor track and field season for the Hawks.
