PHILADELPHIA – The Hawks turned in strong results out of the 4x400m relay, Distance Medley Relay, and 4xMile relay (school record) to highlight the Saint Joseph's men's track and field squad's performances at the 2019 Penn Relays, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field this Thursday through Saturday. The Hawks competed on Friday and Saturday.
Saint Joseph's was the 28th-fastest program out of the 4x400m relay heats on early Friday evening as junior Trae' Robinson, freshman Michael Welde, freshman Kyle Magee (50.24), and junior captain Justin Moscoe (48.70) crossed in 3:16.09, meeting the IC4A mark. That group qualified for Saturday's Eastern final, and with freshman Kris Edobi (48.73) on the third leg and the first, second, and anchor legs remaining the same from the previous day, finished in 3:17.08 for fifth in the field of seven.
Saint Joseph's Distance Medley Relay of junior John Walker (3:02.01), freshman Michael Szwed (49.08), senior captain Rory Houston (1:53.06), and junior Zach Michon (4:09.90) finished in 9:54.05 - marking that group's fastest DMR of the season - to place ninth among the 12 best DMR programs competing at the Penn Relays in the Championship of America Invitational while Saint Joseph's anticipated 4xMile relay went for 16:51.23 in Saturday's Championship of America Invitational as Walker (4:10.8), graduate student captain Collin Crilly (4:12.3), Michon (4:10.2), and senior Will Sponaugle (4:17.9) finished eighth in a field of 13; that time stands as the new school record in the event.
Saint Joseph's 4x200m relay of freshman Michael Baumgarten, Edobi, graduate student captain Barren McCoy, and Welde crossed in 1:28.85 (20th/31) in Friday's Championship of America Invitational, the Sprint Medley Relay of Baumgarten, Edobi, McCoy, and freshman Aidan Sauer (1:58.12) finished in 3:34.29 for eighth in a field of 13 on Friday evening, and the 4x800m relay of senior captain Dylan Eddinger, redshirt freshman George Steinhoff, Houston, and Szwed crossed in a season-best time of 7:46.37 for sixth in a field of 26 programs on Saturday afternoon.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Saint Joseph's sphomore Matthew Scarpill won the 3000m steeplechase to lead additional Hawks at the unscored Carol and John Covert Classic, held at Lehigh University's Goodman Track and Field Complex on Saturday.
Scarpill cruised to a new collegiate-best time in the event in 9:38.07 for first in the field of eight to pick up his first collegiate victory.
Junior Christian Roberts (4:03.07, field of 48) and senior Markell Lodge (6' 4 3/4", field of 12) placed second in the 1500m and high jump, respectively.

Saint Joseph's heads to the 2019 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend, May 3-5. The meet will be held at UMass' Track and Field Complex in Amherst, Mass.
