HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's men's track and field team kicked off the 2012-13 indoor track and field season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet was hosted by Villanova University and was held in Haverford's Alumni Field House. Leading the charge for the Hawks with individual wins were sophomore Matthew McGarvey and freshman Alec Peabody.
Highlighted by McGarvey's dominating time of 1:57.49 in the 800 meter run, eight Hawks placed in the top ten of the event. Senior captain Garrett Barbalinardo, sophomore Steven Butenewicz, and sophomore James Gentile finished in the two through four slots for Saint Joseph's respectively while freshmen Patrick Miller, Ryan Vance, and Liam Murphy and junior Christopher Kinney all recorded times in the event for the first time in their careers.
Peabody won his first collegiate long jump with a best jump of 7.06*. Senior Vinh Nghi To and junior Michael Yap placed fifth and sixth for Saint Joseph's.
Sophomore Matthew Sutorius finished second in the 60 meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.74*, improving on his prior time in the hurdle event by .07.
In the 60 meter dash, junior Jonathan Eisemann and Peabody placed fifth and seventh, respectively. Eisemann clocked in at 7.21 while Peabody followed closely behind with a final time of 7.25*.
The 300 meter dash saw junior Derrick Henry, sophomore Brendan Robert, and junior James Rodgers place fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. Henry checked in with a time of 36.18*, .06 seconds faster than his previous personal best, while the event was the first for both Robert and Rodgers. Junior Tyler Dougherty rounded out the top ten for the Hawks in ninth place.
Sophomore Tyler Gallen took silver in the 500 meter dash, placing second with a time of 1:07.05 to just miss first place by less than two-tenths of a second. Junior Griff Roberts placed fourth in the event while classmate Peter Larmann took seventh with a time of 1:08.56*, .39 seconds faster than his previous personal best.
In the 1000 meter run, senior captain Andrew Townsend took sixth with a time of 2:34.12 while classmate Dave Manion checked in with an eighth-place finish.
In his first collegiate meet, freshman Quinn Davis took seventh in the mile for Saint Joseph's with a time of 4:30.87*.
Five 4x400m relay teams placed in the top ten for the Hawks, highlighted by the "B" team's second-place finish (3:24.86).
To placed fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 12.10m (39' 8 3/8")*.
The Hawks return to action next Sunday, December 9, at the Princeton Holiday Classic in Princeton, N.J. Start time is scheduled for 1:00p.m.
