PHILADELPHIA – The Hawks turned in IC4A-qualifying performances in the 4x400m relay twice, the 4x800m relay, the 3000m steeplechase, and the 5000m as the Saint Joseph's men's track and field squad turned in a strong showing at the Penn Relays, held at Franklin Field this past Thursday through Saturday.
On Saturday evening, Saint Joseph's 4x400m relay of junior Kenny Evely, senior Eddison Gulama, freshman Trae' Robinson, and senior Torey Doaty (46.76 anchor split) crossed in a season-best 3:12.61 to place second in the field of seven out of the 'IC4A' division.
The 4x4 of freshman Justin Moscoe, Robinson, junior Barren McCoy, and Doaty ran SJU's then-fastest time of the season in an IC4A-qualifying 3:13.77 for 21st in a preliminaries field of 44 on Friday afternoon.
On Saturday evening, Saint Joseph's 4x800m relay of junior Dan Ferraiolo (1:53.70), sophomore Dylan Eddinger (1:54.20), senior Jack Magee (1:53.01), and junior Steve Thompson (1:54.50) put together a season-best time of 7:35.40 to place seventh in the field of 27.
With a pair of IC4A-qualifying performances, a duo of senior Hawks represented Saint Joseph's at the Penn Relays Distance Night on Thursday evening. Dan Savage ran a season-best 3000m steeplechase time of 9:14.52 to place 19th in the field of 30 while Jimmy Daniels went 14:41.10 for 5k to place 42nd out of 86.
The Hawks were also represented in the 4x200m relay, Distance Medley Relay, and Sprint Medley Relay on Friday.
SJU's 4x2 of freshman David Bryant, Moscoe, senior Kevin Barry, and Evely crossed in a season-best time of 1:27.96 for 21st in a field of 37. SJU's DMR of freshman Zach Michon (3:04.92), McCoy (48.63), Magee (1:53.39), and junior Dave Garton (4:22.62) crossed in 10:09.55, good for 18th in the field of 26 in the college division, while the SMR of Evely, Doaty, Gulama, and Eddinger checked in with a time of 3:24.49 for eighth in a field of 31; racing out of the second section, the Hawks edged out Savannah State for the second-highest time out of the heat in the SMR Championship of America Invitational. The time was within two seconds of the current school record (3:22.93).
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Collin Crilly claimed the 1500m title in a field of 69 in an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:56.15 at the unscored Lehigh Games on Saturday. Senior Prince Charles Yakubu took second in the triple jump (13.39), sophomore Tommy Higley added a third-place showing in the 3000m steeplechase (9:47.23), and sophomore high jumper Alec Arena hit 1.90m for the second meet in a row.
Saint Joseph's returns to action at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships next Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7. The meet will be hosted by UMass at the Track and Field Complex in Amherst, Mass.
