HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's track and field team kicked off the 2012-13 indoor track and field season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet was hosted by Villanova University and was held in Haverford's Alumni Field House. The Hawks were led by second-place finishes from sophomores Georgia Mason and Kathryn Polaski.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Mason took the silver with a time of 9.02, followed by classmate Kayla Charles in third with 9.26. Freshman Dannah Hayward made her collegiate debut a success with a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 9.50* while senior Francesca D'Angelo finished in sixth. Freshman Carly McGowan timed in at 9.91* for an eighth-place finish in her rookie debut.
Polaski did not waste anytime returning to her dominance in the jumps as she took second place in the long jump (5.38m, 17' 8"). Sophomore Gabriella Becattini placed fifth (5.23, 17' 2"*) while senior captain Genevieve Ruppel and Charles rounded out the top ten with ninth- and tenth-place respective finishes.
Led by McGowan's third-place finish, SJU dominated the third- through eighth-place spots in the 60 meter dash. Junior Mercedes Yanora placed fourth while Ruppel and D'Angelo each improved on personal-best times in the event. Ruppel defeated her prior personal best in the 60 meter dash by four seconds with a final time of 8.31* while D'Angelo's 8.32* destroyed her prior personal best by .21. Freshman Jazmin Dunlap (8.34*) and Mason (8.36*) each placed in the top ten in their first collegiate attempts at the 60 meter dash.
Yanora crossed the finish line of the 300 meter dash in third while D'Angelo's time of 45.63 was good for a tenth-place finish.
In the 500 meter dash, rookies Hayward (1:20.81*), Marina Rufo (1:20.87*), and Jenna DeAngelo (1:22.35*) finished fourth, fifth, and eighth for the Hawks, respectively.
The 800 meter run saw junior Jaclyn Kogut check in with a team-best fifth-place finish in the event (2:19.63*). Charles and senior Hannah Boyce each placed in the top ten in the first 800m events of their careers while Lisa Chen's time of 2:41.33 was good for eighth.
Two 4x400m relay teams placed in the top ten for the Hawks, highlighted by the "A" team's fourth-place finish (4:07.20).
Becattini also placed fifth in the triple jump (19.97, 36' 0"), a team-best in the event, while Polaski checked in in seventh.
The Hawks return to action next Sunday, December 9, at the Princeton Holiday Classic in Princeton, N.J. Start time is scheduled for 1:00p.m.
